Written and Directed by Alan Ball
Across America vampires have begun to live amongst normal society. The start of this episode takes place some two years after the vampires became known and “accepted” in society. The first 5 or so minutes of this episode is spent introducing us to the idea of vampires living amongst humans, as well as introduces us to a mass-produced synthetic blood drink called “Tru Blood” which serves as the vampires primary source of nutrition (so they don’t have to suck the blood from humans).
After we are introduced to the theme of the show in the first couple of scenes, we are then introduced to the main characters. Sookie Stackhouse (played by Anna Paquin) ,is a telepathic waitress in Sam Merlotte’s Bar (played by Sam Trammell) in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Sookie meets her first Vampire named Bill Compton (Played By Stephen Moyer). Sookie is instantly attracted to Compton, and later that evening she saves him from 2 vampire drainers (they slay vampires and drain their blood to sell). Sookie then realizes that she cannot read Compton’s thoughts and he becomes even more interesting to her because she has never met someone who’s mind she couldn’t read.
This episode also introduces us to a few of the other characters in the series. The first being Sookie’s best friend Tara Thornton (played by Rutina Wesley) who comes to work at Sam Merlotte’s bar with Sookie. Another character we are introduced to is Sookie’s brother Jason Stackhouse (played by Ryan Kwante) who at the end of the episode is arrested under the suspision of murdering a local “fang banger” (someone who sleeps with vampires) whom he had been intimate with earlier in the episode.
